The University of Chicago is one of the most prestigious collegiate institutions in the world, perhaps best known for its sociology, economics and physics departments. Located in the historic neighborhood of Hyde Park, there are plenty of wonderful things to do in which to fill a day.
The university itself is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture and is a great place to stroll on a sunny, spring day. Perhaps the most notable piece of architecture in this respect is Rockefeller Chapel, a popular place for weddings. There are several, independent bookstores in the surrounding neighborhood, a true heaven for book lovers. And there are many great restaurants, especially along 57th Street. The Medici, for one, is a Hyde Park institution. And if you are looking for a drink to quench your thirst, head on up to 55th street and grab a beer at Jimmy’s Woodlawn Tap. Both locations are very popular with students.
There are several museums nearby in which to quench your thirst for knowledge. By far the largest is the Museum of Science and Industry, a massive complex with enough exhibits to fill several days of exploring. For those interested in African-American History, the DuSable Museum in Washington Park is a great way to spend an afternoon.
Also be sure to head down to the Midway Plaissance, which separates the neighborhoods of Hyde Park and Woodlawn. In the summer, you should be able find a pick-up soccer game to enjoy. And in the winter, lace up your ice skates and take a few laps around the rink. And if you are looking for one of the best views of the Chicago skyline, head east on 55th Street to Promontory Point on Lake Michigan. From here, you’ll have great views of the city to enjoy. And it if its summer, head south a few blocks to the 61st Street Beach and have a relaxing afternoon along the lake.
